Google Gemini for Home gets faster, smarter with major upgrade

Google is overhauling Gemini for Home with faster responses and smarter features that could finally make smart home assistants less frustrating. The update cuts down on chatty responses, replacing long-winded explanations with direct replies like 'Alarm set for 9 AM.' Common commands like turning lights on and off are now up to 40% faster, according to Google.

Beyond speed, Gemini gains contextual awareness with new capabilities like setting alarms based on real-world events - such as waking you when a game starts. Users can now chain multiple commands together, check both remaining time and original duration for timers, and enjoy more reliable recurring alarms. The assistant also handles regional weather units and local news more intelligently.

Translation mode has expanded to 30 languages with faster performance, while new automation tools in the Google Home app let you trigger actions based on specific conditions. Google is rolling out these features to 14 new countries including Mexico, Japan, and much of Europe. Some capabilities like advanced translation require a Google Home Premium subscription. While Android Central notes these improvements fix previous annoyances, the real test will be whether Gemini maintains its speed and accuracy over time without falling back into over-explaining everything.
