Google announced major upgrades to its Gemini AI for Home devices, addressing long-standing frustrations with voice command rigidity. The update allows users to control smart home devices using casual phrases instead of exact terminology, with improved context awareness to distinguish between similar items like "lamp" and "light". Chief Product Officer Anish Kattukaran highlighted that users no longer need technical language to manage their living spaces.

The expressive lighting feature stands out, enabling voice commands like "the color of the ocean" or "my favorite team’s colors" to adjust smart bulbs without referencing hex codes. For appliances, precision controls now support exact humidity settings and preheating ovens to specific temperatures. Climate systems gain advanced presets, letting users hold temperatures without cycling through menus. These changes aim to make interactions feel less robotic and more intuitive.

Google expanded Gemini’s availability to Mexico with Spanish language support rolling out globally. Families benefit from supervised accounts for kids, allowing age-appropriate interactions like spelling help or jokes. The update also integrates Gemini Live for detailed news summaries, letting users ask follow-up questions during conversations.

The Android Home app now supports Android 16 features, including edge-to-edge display and predictive back gestures. While the update fixes basic usability issues, critics note it prioritizes functionality over groundbreaking innovation. Still, the focus on natural language and family use cases marks a step toward more human-like smart home assistance.
