Fitbit revamps Sleep Score with deeper insights in Public Preview

Fitbit’s Sleep Score is getting a major upgrade in its Public Preview, offering more granular data to help users understand their rest. The update incorporates additional metrics, including total sleep duration (the vast majority of the score) and time to reach Sound Sleep—the phase where the body settles into deep, restorative rest. Users can now see breakdowns of restfulness, awakenings, and interruptions via colorful charts, with ranges tailored to age and gender.

Fitbit’s digital Coach and Premium subscribers gain actionable insights, such as suggestions to adjust wind-down routines if sleep onset is delayed. The app may also explain score fluctuations by linking them to fatigue levels, even if users feel fine. However, Fitbit acknowledges a current mismatch between device-reported data and app assessments, advising users to prioritize the app’s device readings until resolved.

Non-Premium users can join the Public Preview but won’t access subscriber-exclusive features. This expansion follows Fitbit’s push into women’s health tools, like Cycle Health for period tracking. While the new Sleep Score may initially confuse users with lower numbers, Fitbit emphasizes it reflects a more accurate, holistic view of sleep quality.

The update underscores Fitbit’s focus on transforming raw data into meaningful health guidance, empowering users to make informed adjustments. For those prioritizing sleep, this rework could be a game-changer—if the app’s reliability improves.
