Fitbit Air vs Whoop: Google's $99 Screenless Tracker

Google has officially unveiled the Fitbit Air, a screenless fitness tracker designed to compete directly with Whoop. The device costs $99 and is now available for pre-order, with wider shipping starting May 26. Pre-orders placed before May 25 include a $35 Google Store credit for accessories.

The Fitbit Air weighs just 12g and appears roughly half the size of the Whoop based on side-by-side photos from Reddit. Despite its slim form factor, Google claims up to a week of battery life. The tracker sits underneath a fabric band with a small cutout revealing an LED status light on the left side. Different light patterns communicate charging status (white pulse), low battery (red flash), firmware updates (fast white blink), and critical battery levels (solid red). A double-tap gesture lets users check battery percentage—white indicates 20-100% remaining, red means below 20%—and dismiss alarms.

Demo units are now available at Google Store locations, giving potential buyers a chance to compare it directly with Whoop in person. The tracker uses 24/7 heart-rate monitoring to continuously track health data, matching Whoop's core proposition but in a more compact package. If Google can deliver that promised week-long battery life in such a compact design, the Fitbit Air could become a compelling alternative for users seeking a minimal, subscription-free tracker.
