Cross‑platform eSIM transfers finally work with iOS 26 and Android 16

Apple and Google finally untangled the eSIM headache that has plagued cross‑platform phone swaps. After debuting the feature at WWDC last year, both firms released software updates—iOS 26 and Android 16—that actually enable peer‑to‑peer transfers without carrier intervention. Users can now move a cellular line between an iPhone and an Android device in minutes for most carriers that have opted into the standard.

The process hinges on a simple Wi‑Fi connection and a QR‑code or manual pairing code. On Android, you open Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs & mobile network → Download new SIM and choose ‘Transfer from iPhone.’ The iPhone then scans the code in Settings → Cellular → Transfer Phone Number, confirming the number to move. Both devices must stay close for reliable connection.

iOS 26 mirrors the steps: Settings → Cellular → Set up Cellular → Transfer from Android, display a QR code, and the Android device scans it. Both phones lose cellular service briefly, but the handoff completes without a carrier call or store visit. This change also reduces the risk of SIM‑swapping attacks tied to physical cards. With this support, switching platforms loses its last technical barrier.
