Google's latest Android Canary build (2603) suggests the company may finally reverse some of its most frustrating design choices. The build introduces several usability improvements that have long annoyed Android users, including the return of separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles. This change would undo a controversial decision from Android 11 that merged both controls into a single Internet toggle, forcing users through an extra step to disable either connection.

Beyond the connectivity fix, Google is testing a native App Lock feature that would let users secure apps using PIN, pattern, password, or fingerprint authentication. Currently, this requires third-party apps or custom Android skins. The company is also experimenting with app bubbles, allowing apps to open in floating windows via long-press gestures, similar to picture-in-picture mode. Additional UI refinements include enhanced blur effects throughout the system and a redesigned long-press menu that separates app shortcuts from system actions like App info and Pause.

These features represent a significant shift in Google's approach to Android's user experience. After years of removing what many considered basic functionality, the company appears ready to restore some of the control users have been demanding. While Canary builds aren't available through standard updates and require manual flashing, this testing suggests these changes could arrive in a future stable release.
