WhatsApp Tests Guest Chat Feature for Non-Account Users on iOS and Web

WhatsApp is testing a new guest chat feature for users without accounts, expanding its beta trials to iOS and web platforms. The functionality, previously exclusive to Android users, allows individuals to initiate conversations with non-WhatsApp users via a shareable link generated in the “Invite a friend” section. When accessed, the link opens a secure, end-to-end encrypted chat session through WhatsApp Web, ensuring privacy for both parties.

The iOS beta test requires guests to accept WhatsApp’s terms, provide a name, and start the chat—no account needed. Notably, the invite link can be shared via SMS or other apps, broadening accessibility. However, the feature lacks support for group chats, voice messages, or media sharing, and sessions expire after 10 days of inactivity. Currently limited to a small group of testers across iOS, Android, and web, Meta has not announced a timeline for broader availability.

This development aims to address low adoption in markets like the U.S., where WhatsApp trails competitors like iMessage. By simplifying cross-platform communication, the feature could attract casual users who prefer not to commit to a full account. However, its reliance on WhatsApp Web for encryption raises questions about convenience versus security for less tech-savvy audiences.

While promising, the tool’s limitations and opt-in nature suggest Meta is cautiously testing its viability. End-to-end encryption remains a core selling point, but the lack of advanced features may hinder mainstream adoption. For now, the guest chat remains a niche experiment—one that could reshape how WhatsApp balances accessibility with privacy in competitive messaging landscapes.
