WhatsApp Web is rolling out voice and video calling to beta testers, bringing the feature to the browser-based platform for the first time. After more than a year of development, the functionality is now available for one-on-one chats, with group calls still in the works.

Meta has been working to bring calling capabilities to WhatsApp Web, which previously required users to install the desktop app. The feature uses end-to-end encryption via Signal's protocol and includes video call screen sharing. Beta users can now click the call button directly in chat windows without launching a separate application.

While the initial rollout focuses on individual conversations, WhatsApp plans to expand access beyond beta testers Group calls with support for up to 32 participants, call links, and scheduled calls are expected when the feature fully launches. Users can join the beta program through Settings > Help and Feedback to potentially access new features early.

Quick Fact: The voice and video calling feature has been in development for about a year.
