iOS 27 Changes Notification Center Swipe Gesture

Since iOS 5 in 2011, iPhone and iPad users have accessed Notification Center by swiping down from the top edge of their displays. With iOS 27, Apple is disrupting this long-standing behavior by repurposing the top-center swipe gesture to activate the new Siri AI system.

When Siri AI is enabled in iOS 27, swiping down from the center of the top edge now launches Siri instead of opening Notification Center. Users can still access Notification Center by swiping down from the top-left corner. Alerts now animate from the top-left corner to guide users toward the smaller Notification Center area.

Apple is prioritizing Siri AI access, dedicating most of the top edge to invoking the new Siri experience. This represents the most significant change to Notification Center access since the iPhone X introduced top-right corner swipes. On iPad OS 27, the area above Home screen icons was initially dominated by Siri invocation, though beta 2 improved the layout with uniform regions for Notification Center and Control Center.

After 15 years of established muscle memory, users will need time to adapt. Early feedback on Siri AI remains positive, though the gesture change may frustrate longtime users. iOS 27 is currently in beta with official release expected next month.
