iOS 26.4 Finally Brings Search to iCloud.com

iOS 26.4 quietly introduced a useful upgrade to iCloud.com that brings web-based file and photo search to Apple's cloud service for the first time. The update adds an "Allow Search" toggle that, when enabled, lets users search through iCloud Drive files and iCloud Photos directly from a web browser, matching capabilities that competitors have offered for years.

The feature is disabled by default and must be turned on manually in Settings under iCloud > iCloud.com. Once enabled, users get search suggestions for filenames, folder names, and document types in Drive, plus dates, people, and locations in Photos. Apple notes that searches are encrypted and processed on-device, meaning no search history gets stored on Apple's servers.

This closes a gap that has long existed between Apple's web services and native apps. While Google and Microsoft have prioritized robust web search for years, Apple has historically lagged behind with iCloud.com. The feature particularly matters for users on non-Apple devices—those working across Windows or Android ecosystems now get a functional search experience without needing an iPhone or Mac.
