Brazil warns Apple, Google over under‑age betting apps

Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Safety sent letters to Apple and Google warning that numerous betting apps on their stores are reachable by minors. The notice cites the new ECA Digital decree, which obliges app stores to block unapproved gambling services. Among the flagged apps are clones of the “Fortune Tiger” slot, locally called “Jogo do Tigrinho.”

The letters, drafted by the National Secretariat for Digital Rights (Sedigi) and the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), argue many of these offerings lack federal authorization and contravene the decree’s age‑gating requirements. Apple recently rolled out an age‑verification API for Brazil, forcing any app that self‑reports loot boxes to be rated 18+. Google points to its IARC‑based rating system as compliance evidence.

Both platforms have a recent track record of removing problematic listings, from “nudifying” apps to a fake crypto wallet that siphoned over $10 million. Apple declined comment, while Google said it reminded developers of their ECA Digital duties. The enforcement push underscores Brazil’s tightening grip on digital gambling and could pressure other app ecosystems to tighten age controls.
