Brazil presses Apple on betting apps and minors

Brazilian officials have given Apple five business days to provide more details on its App Store safeguards regarding betting apps accessible to minors. This follows an initial inquiry in April concerning the alleged lack of age controls in such apps on both Apple's and Google's platforms.

Brazil recently enacted the ECA Digital law, which mandates app stores to restrict minors' access to gambling content. While Apple introduced age-assurance measures for 18+ apps, officials noted that many betting apps still appeared to lack proper age restrictions or federal authorization, questioning the enforcement of these safeguards.

Officials are now seeking specific information on how Apple validates app authorizations, distinguishes simulation apps from real betting apps, and prevents minors from accessing inappropriate content. They also requested details on monitoring procedures, removal times, and the timeline for implementing corrective measures, including an update to block under-18 users from downloading restricted apps. The secretariats aim to make responses public, allowing for confidential submissions separately. Google's responses were deemed less satisfactory, with similar requests for enhanced detail on its verification and monitoring processes.
