Apple appears to be reconsidering titanium for future iPhone models after switching to aluminum in the iPhone 17 Pro. According to Weibo leaker Instant Digital, the company is actively developing an improved titanium formula that could address previous thermal conductivity issues.

The shift back to aluminum with iPhone 17 Pro surprised many observers, as Apple had positioned titanium as a premium feature in earlier Pro models. Heat dissipation concerns reportedly drove this change, though the move represented a step back from the distinctive titanium design language.

Apple's research focuses on solving titanium's poor thermal conductivity while maintaining strength and reducing weight. The company currently uses titanium in the iPhone Air and plans to implement it in the iPhone Ultra as well. These ultra-thin models benefit from titanium's durability characteristics.

Whether Apple can successfully engineer around titanium's thermal limitations will determine if Pro models return to the material. The aluminum experiment may prove temporary if the improved formula delivers adequate heat management.
