Apple launches free business email to challenge Microsoft and Google

Apple is entering the enterprise email market with a free hosted service for up to 500 users, directly challenging Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. The new offering includes custom domain support, 5GB of free iCloud storage, and essential business tools like calendar delegation and company directories. Users can upgrade to 2TB storage for $0.99 per month.

This move targets startups and new businesses who walk into Apple Stores to buy devices. Instead of immediately signing up for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, founders can now get devices, domain registration, email hosting, and calendar services all through Apple's Business portal. The service supports open standards like IMAP and CalDAV, ensuring compatibility with Android and Windows devices.

While established businesses entrenched in Google or Microsoft ecosystems are unlikely to switch immediately, Apple's free offering could attract net-new companies. The company is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for business needs, from device management through Mosyle to hosted email services. As Google and Microsoft continue raising prices, Apple's free alternative built into macOS, iOS, and iPadOS could gain traction over time.
