Apple Closes Three US Stores Today Citing Declining Mall Conditions

Apple is shutting down three retail locations across the United States today, with the final closures happening at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. local times. The affected stores are Apple Towson Town Center in Maryland, Apple North County in California, and Apple Trumbull in Connecticut. These closures were first announced in April and represent a rare contraction in Apple's retail footprint.

Apple blamed the shutdowns on departing retailers and deteriorating mall conditions at all three locations. Trumbull Mall faces particular trouble, having recently defaulted on over $150 million in loans amid ongoing business closures. The nearby Towson Town Center has also lost major tenants this year, including Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, and Madewell, creating a challenging retail environment.

The timing raises questions given the Towson location's historic significance—it became the first Apple Store in the US to unionize in June 2022. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union has criticized the closure as discriminatory, arguing that Towson employees aren't receiving the same transfer opportunities offered to workers at the other closing locations. Apple's collective bargaining agreement requires offering positions within 50 miles if new stores open nearby, though no such plans exist currently.

This marks only the latest chapter in ongoing tensions between Apple and organized labor, following previous unionization efforts at other retail locations. The closures suggest that even premium brands struggle when mall anchors disappear and foot traffic dries up.
