Apple Closes Three U.S. Stores Including First Unionized Location

Apple shuttered three retail stores across the United States on Saturday, including its first unionized location in Towson, Maryland. The closures affect Apple Trumbull in Connecticut, Apple North County in California, and Apple Towson Town Center, with the latter representing a significant milestone in the company's labor history.

The Towson location made headlines in 2022 when employees became the first Apple retail workers to unionize under the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers' Coalition. After winning a collective bargaining agreement in 2024, these workers now face different treatment than their non-union counterparts at the other closing locations.

Apple cites declining mall conditions as the reason for exiting these locations, particularly pointing to Towson Town Center's loss of major retailers. The company maintains it is following the contract's terms, which allow transfers only if a new store opens within 50 miles. Union leaders accuse Apple of potential union busting, arguing the agreement requires equal treatment regardless of union status.

This closure sends a mixed signal to other retail employees considering unionization. While the Towson workers secured a contract, the lack of transfer opportunities may discourage organizing efforts at other Apple locations, potentially benefiting a company that has historically opposed unionization.
