Adobe has launched a limited test of its experimental iPhone camera app, Project Indigo, introducing generative AI-powered photo editing tools within an "AI Playground." This AI Playground is available for free to a small percentage of users for a few weeks, requiring no sign-on and collecting only anonymous usage data.

The AI Playground offers four experimental features: Object Editing for removing distractions or defocusing backgrounds; Styles for re-rendering photos with artistic techniques; Photo Guidance for suggestions on reshooting and editing; and Custom Edit, which allows for arbitrary text prompts to transform images. Adobe is using Google's Nano Banana model, with a custom ML model to enhance the resulting images to HDR.

These AI features are exclusive to images captured within Project Indigo, with the AI Playground button grayed out for imported photos. Adobe is using this experiment to gather insights into user interaction with generative AI editing, with potential for future expansion or paid offerings based on its success.
