The 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study ranks vehicles based on problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) after three years of ownership. Toyota dominated the results with segment wins for the Corolla, Camry, and 4Runner, while Lexus captured three premium categories including the GX and UX. The study draws from real-world feedback from owners of 2023 model-year vehicles.

Subaru's Crosstrek topped the small SUV category, while Chevrolet's Equinox surprised by leading compact SUVs over traditional Japanese rivals. BMW's X4 achieved a notable segment win in premium compact SUVs despite the brand's historical reputation for complex electronics. Cadillac's XT6 topped upper midsize premium SUVs, suggesting the brand is closing reliability gaps with Lexus.

Modern reliability challenges increasingly stem from software and electrification rather than mechanical issues. Premium vehicles averaged 217 PP100, widening the gap over mass-market brands. Mobile phone integration, particularly Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, remains the top industry complaint for a third consecutive year. PHEVs proved most problematic among electrified powertrains, followed by BEVs and hybrids, while gas-powered vehicles recorded the lowest PP100 scores.
