Toyota has dethroned Subaru as Consumer Reports' most reliable car brand for 2026, reflecting a significant shift in the automotive reliability landscape. This ranking carries substantial market weight as 41% of car buyers prioritize reliability over budget or ownership costs according to a 2024 CarGurus study. The Japanese automaker's return to the top spot underscores the growing importance of dependability in competitive auto markets.

Subaru fell to second place while Lexus dropped from second to third. Interestingly, Toyota owns about 20% of Subaru and the companies share several models including the bZ/Solterra and GR86/BRZ. The ranking changes don't indicate Subaru or Lexus declining in reliability, but rather Toyota's significant improvements. This reshuffling at the top highlights the intense competition among Japanese brands for reliability supremacy.

Toyota's comeback stems from resolving issues with its redesigned models. The 2026 Camry, Tacoma, and Tundra all moved from below-average to average or above-average reliability. Meanwhile, Tesla made notable gains, rising from 17th to 9th place, with Model Y and Model 3 ranking as the most reliable EVs in their categories. Mazda fell sharply from 6th to 14th, becoming the lowest-ranked Japanese brand due to PHEV version issues and exclusion of the new CX-5.
