Asian automakers Toyota and Hyundai are capitalizing on surging US demand for hybrid vehicles, driven by elevated petrol prices linked to the Iran conflict. Hybrid sales jumped nearly 20% in July year-over-year, while overall US car sales declined 1.5%, per RBC Capital Markets.

Hyundai sold 43,727 hybrids in July, a 62% increase, repurposing part of its Georgia EV plant for hybrid production. Toyota's US hybrid sales rose 22%, and Honda saw 15% growth. Together, the three Asian brands command 86% of the US hybrid market, according to Baum & Associates.

Unlike plug-in hybrids, traditional hybrids require no change in driving behavior and offer relief from high fuel costs. The average US petrol price reached $4.06 a gallon, up a third from last year. Despite this, EV sales have not rebounded, partly due to the Trump administration eliminating a $7,500 consumer tax credit. Tesla owners are trading in vehicles at record 21% rates, with 17% switching to Toyota.

Detroit's Big Three lag behind, with GM selling 33% fewer EVs in Q2 and Ford's July EV sales dropping 75%. Both are pivoting toward extended-range EVs and planning broader hybrid adoption by 2030.
