Hyundai Motor Reaches Tentative Wage Deal with Union

Hyundai Motor has reached a tentative wage agreement with its labor union, putting an end to months of on-and-off walkouts that disrupted production. The preliminary deal was announced on Tuesday, following the first full-day labor strike in a decade on Friday, according to the Korean carmaker. The agreement is pending approval by union members in a vote scheduled for next Monday.

Management and union negotiators began talks in May but remained at odds over bonuses, retirement age, and other issues before reaching a deal. Under the preliminary agreement, the monthly basic salary will increase by 100,000 won (about $72), with an annual bonus set at 400% of the increased basic salary, plus a one-off cash payment of 12.7 million won (about $9,180).

Regarding the union's demand to raise the retirement age to 65, both sides agreed to implement any new legislation immediately if enacted, while maintaining regular wages through age 64. Each worker will also receive 15 treasury shares and additional welfare benefits. Hyundai noted that discussions included plans to deploy humanoid Atlas robots on some assembly lines, likely first in the U.S., starting in 2028, though no further details were provided.
