Hyundai Factory Workers Strike Over Robot Fears

Workers at Hyundai's Metaplant America, the most automated auto factory in the US with over 850 robots, are expressing concerns over the introduction of humanoid robots. The plant currently utilizes robots for tasks like assembly and uses automated guided vehicles and Boston Dynamics' Spot robots for inspections.

Hyundai plans to deploy Atlas humanoid robots in 2028 for sorting parts, though management claims they won't replace human workers, citing the need for human dexterity in handling soft components. Hyundai has committed to employing 8,100 human workers by 2031 as part of a significant economic development deal with Georgia.

Despite these assurances, labor unions like the United Auto Workers (UAW) are wary. The UAW recently criticized General Motors for adding robot arms amid layoffs and has warned about the potential impact of humanoid robotics on employment and compensation. The effectiveness and cost-efficiency of humanoid robots compared to specialized robots and human workers remain to be seen.
