A new study reveals that electric vehicle batteries are lasting longer than previously feared by drivers. Analyzing over 500,000 tests across 20 popular models including the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4, researchers found most used EVs retain about 90 percent of their original usable battery capacity after 150,000 kilometers. This durability data is significant as EV battery warranties typically cover eight years or 100,000 miles.

The median state of health remained between 87 and 94 percent after 150,000 km, and between 91 and 97 percent after 50,000 km. Importantly, degradation speed varied based on climate, battery size, and driver habits. These findings should alleviate some concerns for drivers switching from petrol models, though the study noted that unlike combustion engines, a car's technical condition heavily influences EV value regardless of age and mileage.
