Wayne Pivac has left retirement to become head coach of Italian side Benetton. The contract runs until June 2028 with an option for two seasons. Pivac, who guided Wales to a Six Nations title in 2021 and a win in Bloemfontein in 2022, departed after a 13‑12 home loss to Georgia proved decisive. His exit came as Wales missed the 2023 World Cup knockout stage.

He arrived after a series of Zoom talks sparked by a single phone call from the club. Pivac also recruited former Scarlets fly‑half Rhys Patchell as attack coach, citing Patchell’s work ethic and his role in the 2017 Scarlets championship. The duo bridges a 30‑year gap, aiming to blend experience with ideas. Patchell will also mentor younger backs, adding depth to Benetton’s attacking structures.

Pivac’s move gives Benetton a coach with international pedigree and a personal stake in the United Rugby Championship. His previous tenure ended after 13 wins from 34 matches, but the Georgia defeat remains his final catalyst. Benetton hope the veteran's tactical acumen will translate into a top‑four finish.
