Former Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell is set to join Wayne Pivac's coaching staff at Italian United Rugby Championship side Benetton next season. The 32-year-old, who retired from playing in September 2025, will take on the role of attack coach after working part-time with Dragons and Wales as a kicking specialist.

Patchell and Pivac previously worked together at Scarlets and Japanese club NEC Green Rockets Tokatsu, where Patchell held a player-coach role. Pivac, who signed a two-year contract with Benetton until June 2028, specifically requested Patchell's appointment. The New Zealander praised Patchell's playing career and shared vision for the game, emphasizing their desire to play an exciting style that appeals to both players and fans.

Patchell will continue his duties with Dragons until the end of the season, including their Challenge Cup semi-final against Montpellier in May. The move marks Patchell's first full-time coaching position after a playing career that included 22 Wales caps and participation in the 2019 World Cup semi-final. Benetton president Antonio Pavanello expressed confidence in Patchell's ability to contribute significantly to the team's development and deliver tangible results on the field.
