Vaughan: Captaincy could be Root's spark

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the Test captaincy could be the motivational boost Joe Root needs. Speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, Vaughan suggested that the return to the role might rekindle Root's enthusiasm for Test cricket, particularly as many of his former teammates have retired.

Root is returning as captain under interim coach Marcus Trescothick, with Stephen Fleming set to take over for the South Africa tour. Vaughan acknowledged the challenges Root faced during his previous tenure, including the impact of Covid-19 and a focus on white-ball cricket. He feels Root was dealt a "dodgy hand" and that Fleming's experience could help manage the team effectively.

Vaughan emphasized that winning should be the priority, regardless of style, and highlighted the need for technical improvement in England's batting. He believes Fleming, a respected former captain and coach, is a strong choice to guide the team, especially in his ability to work alongside white-ball coach Brendon McCullum.
