Stephen Fleming Appointed England Test Coach

England have named Stephen Fleming as the new head of the men's Test team, taking over after the Pakistan series. His first priority will be to reinvigorate Joe Root—who has captained 65 Tests and returned to the role after a five‑yearုိ stint—to lead the side through a busy winter tour of South Africa and the home Ashes next summer.

Fleming also plans to develop Harry Brook into a future long‑term leader. Brook was overlooked as stand‑in captain in the Oval Test but has shown promise with a 4‑0 T20 series win over India and a 2‑1 ODI series victory. The coach believes Brook’s talent and leadership need more time before taking on the red‑ball mantle.

The partnership between Fleming and former white‑ball coach Brendon McCullum should give England balance across formats, preserving the T20 form that won the 2022 World T20 and keeping the ODI side on track for the 2027 50‑over World Cup. Off‑field discipline, especially the recent “boozing” incidents, will also be a key focus for the new coaching regime.

The appointment is seen as a chance to restore England’s success on all fronts after a period of inconsistency.
