In 2014, when the Commonwealth Games were last in Glasgow, Claudia Fragapane won four gold medals on her debut. Twelve years on, Bristol-born teenager Shantae Amankwaah hopes to follow in Fragapane's footsteps. Part of the same Bristol Hawks club, Amankwaah said it is "surreal" to compete in the same event. "I've always looked up to her... it's really inspiring, especially because we're from the same place."

At 17, Amankwaah is the youngest gymnast in Team England's squad, competing in uneven bars, beam and floor. She was 2024 British junior all-around champion and won senior all-around bronze at the British Championships. Her aim: "Just take in the whole experience... just to really enjoy it with the team and have fun."

Fragapane, who retired in 2024, advised: "She just needs to go out there and really enjoy herself and hold all the memories." Amankwaah also has family support: grandmother Rose, a former sprinter dubbed "fastest woman in Africa," and father Kevin, who made over 400 Football League appearances. Kevin, now a personal trainer, writes training programmes and helps her focus: "He knows when to give me a bit of space; he knows what wise words will help."

Her parents get nervous watching: "He [dad] gets really nervous... sometimes he even struggles to even film my routines... but it's just because he wants the best for me." They want her to enjoy the moment: "not too much pressure put on me just because it's my first one; just have to enjoy the moment while I'm young."
