Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag found himself in hot water after a televised clip showed him vaping in the dressing‑room during the IPL clash against Punjab Kings. The 24‑year‑old admitted the offence and faced a fine that cuts 25% from his match fee. The incident sparked debate over the league’s image.

The organisers say Parag breached the tournament’s code of conduct, a rule aimed at preventing behaviour that could tarnish cricket’s reputation. In addition to the fine, the captain received one demerit point, and the BCCI is reportedly exploring harsher penalties for players, officials and the club itself.

Vaping is illegal in India for nicotine consumption, making the act a legal breach as well as a sporting offence. Earlier in the tournament, Royals manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder was fined for using a mobile phone in the dugout, suggesting a pattern of discipline issues within the side that could affect team confidence and fan support during the rest of the season.

With the IPL’s broadcast reach now extending to over 200 countries, any misconduct draws global scrutiny. The Royals will need to tighten discipline if they hope to finish the season in the top four and qualify for the Champions League T20. The BCCI’s response will likely set a precedent that reinforces the league's standards and protects its integrity.
