Neil Gourley vows to race despite injuries for Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Scotland’s 31‑year‑old middle‑distance star Neil Gourley refuses to let a bruised winter ruin this dream. Selected for the mile at next summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he told BBC Scotland he would “crawl round the four laps” if necessary. The selection follows silver medals at world and European indoor 1500 m championships.

His winter was marred by a patella‑tendon tear lingering from the previous season, a February return, then a broken foot in March that forced weeks on the sidelines. Cross‑training still has restored consistency and he feels “not too far away from fitness.” He aims to hit sub‑4:00 for the mile and already has six weeks to turn that into race‑ready form.

The Glasgow stage pits Gourley against compatriots Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman, a trio fans expect to battle for medals. After missing the 2019 European Indoor final in the city through illness and the 2025 World Indoors through injury, Gourley calls this his “third time lucky.” A medal would cement his comeback and give Glasgow major podium since 2014. He will officially line up in the mile healthy.
