Para-cyclist Neil Fachie secured his sixth Commonwealth Games gold medal for Scotland in the Tandem B 1,000m event, motivated by thoughts of his three-year-old son, Fraser, during the race.

Fachie, a four-time Paralympic medallist who had effectively retired after the Paris Paralympics, returned to cycling for the home Games, balancing it with his job at Amazon and family life. He admitted he did not expect to win gold due to his limited training, with sessions only occurring once a week.

Alongside his English pilot Aaron Pope, Fachie overcame strong competition from Australia and Wales. This victory marks Scotland's first cycling medal of the competition. The women's team sprint trio of Lauren Bell, Iona Moir, and Maddy Silcock also secured a bronze medal, beating Australia.

Fachie's win surpasses the gold medal count of notable Scottish athletes like Duncan Scott and Sir Chris Hoy. He plans to compete in the tandem sprint on Saturday, which he expects to be his final race, concluding his career at a home Games.
