Montpellier claimed their third Challenge Cup title with a dominant 59-26 victory over Ulster at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao. Despite Nick Timoney's early try giving Ulster hope, the French side's ruthless efficiency saw them cross nine times. Coach Richie Murphy admitted his team faced 'a real powerhouse of French rugby' and simply had too much power.

Ulster's campaign showed marked improvement from the previous year, finishing with 52 points compared to 38 previously. They climbed from 14th to ninth in the United Rugby Championship table and reached a first European final in 14 years. However, the silverware drought continues after missing out on both domestic play-offs and Champions Cup qualification.

The province paid a heavy price for their success, with key players unavailable for the final. Eight players were away with Ireland's Six Nations squad, while captain Iain Henderson served suspension and Stuart McCloskey, Jacob Stockdale and Rob Herring missed through injury. Murphy acknowledged the squad lacks depth to compete across multiple competitions.

Despite the crushing defeat, Murphy believes the young squad gained valuable experience. The season marked progress with 52 points securing a top-eight finish that historically guarantees playoff places. While disappointed, Ulster showed they can compete at European level and will use this heartbreak as motivation for future campaigns.
