Somerset opened their title defence by replicating last year’s final triumph, beating Hampshire Hawks at Taunton. Will Smeed, who struck 94 in the 2025 decider, smashed 59 from 29 balls, anchoring a seven‑wicket win. His 22‑ball half‑century paired with a 90‑run opening stand with Tom Banton, putting the champions 158‑all out. The rain‑softened pitch offered little assistance, making run‑scoring crucial.

James Rew, named in England’s upcoming Test squad, contributed 47 not out alongside his brother Thomas, guiding Somerset to a comfortable finish. Hampshire captain James Vince top‑scored with 58, but disciplined bowling from Craig Overton (3‑27) and Jake Ball (3‑28) kept the visitors to 158. Somerset’s fielders forced two catches, tightening pressure. The win gives the holders three points and early momentum in Group South.

Across the opening round, all 18 counties launched their campaigns. Yorkshire chased 168 to defeat Nottinghamshire, powered by Jonny Bairstow’s unbeaten 83. Gloucestershire bowled Warwickshire out for 74, while Surrey posted 213‑6 against Lancashire. Kent’s Sam Billings hit 84 not out to seal a 209‑run target. Leicestershire fell short, Durham edged Derbyshire narrowly. The results set a clear hierarchy as the Blast heats up.
