Mary Rand, the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics, has died at the age of 86.

She secured long jump gold at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, breaking the British and Olympic records with her first leap of 6.59m before smashing the world record on her fifth attempt with 6.76m. This achievement also made her the first British woman to win gold, silver, and bronze at a single Games, having added silver in the inaugural women's pentathlon and bronze in the 4x100m relay. Ann Packer, who won 800m gold days later, called Rand 'the most gifted athlete I ever saw' and stated 'there has never been anything like her since.'

Born in Somerset, Rand won 12 national titles across multiple disciplines before retiring at 28 due to injury after the 1968 Games. She was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1964 and received an MBE in 1965. Her legacy as a pioneer for British women in athletics remains profound.
