Kettering Town's Shirt Sponsorship Revolution

In 1976, Kettering Town made history by becoming the first English club to feature a sponsor's name on their shirt. Player-manager Derek Dougan arranged a £4,000 deal with Kettering Tyres, matching the club's initials.

The Football Association swiftly banned the move, calling it a rule breach. Dougan rebranded it as 'Kettering T' but was forced to drop the idea entirely after threats of fines and stadium closure.

Despite the early setback, Dougan’s bold experiment paved the way for today’s shirt sponsorship industry, now worth hundreds of millions. Premier League clubs net massive deals, with gambling sponsors alone contributing over $135m in 2024-25.

Experts say Kettering’s legacy echoes through modern football. Shirt branding has become a global marketing tool, while fans embrace retro designs, linking nostalgia to brand identity from grassroots to elite levels.
