James Lowe’s 70th Try Leaves Leinster and Ireland Uncertain

James Lowe’s record‑breaking night against the Lions has left Leinster and Ireland in limbo. The 33‑year‑old crossed the line for his 70th try in a 59‑10 URC quarter‑final, surpassing Shane Horgan’s long‑standing record. His contract expires end‑of‑season with no new deal on the table before the season’s final fixtures, the club must decide his fate.

Coach Leo Cullen stayed tight‑lipped, saying Lowe’s future will be decided by the player himself. Cullen added that “conversations are always ongoing” but hinted that “some people will move on.” The lack of a new contract means a move abroad would bar Lowe from 2027 World Cup contention under head coach Andy Farrell.

Since arriving from the Chiefs in 2017, Lowe has been a linchpin for Leinster and the Irish side, scoring 17 tries in 45 caps and helping secure Six Nations titles in 2023 and 2024. His recent hamstring hiccup kept him out of the Champions Cup final, yet the two‑try haul shows he remains a lethal weapon when fit.

Cullen praised Lowe’s character, noting his energy and uniqueness within the squad. With no contract extension in sight, Leinster faces a dilemma: retain a proven scorer or risk losing him to a foreign club, which would end his Ireland chances. The decision will shape the province’s offensive core for the next season.
