Farrell weighs Lowe's Japan move against 2027 World Cup prospects

Head coach Andy Farrell said former Leinster wing James Lowe is unlikely to feature for Ireland while he plays in Japan, though he did not rule out a call‑up for the 2027 World Cup. The 34‑year‑old left Leinster after contract talks stalled and is being linked with Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath as a replacement for Cheslin Kolbe. Farrell acknowledged the loss as a blow to his squad.

The IRFU traditionally selects only players from the four provinces, a rule Farrell said will be tested over the next year. Injuries have already thinned Ireland’s back‑line, with Tommy O’Brien, Shayne Bolton and Mack Hansen sidelined and Jacob Stockdale shifted to the left wing. Versatile Jamie Osborne has been handed the 11 jersey for Saturday’s Nations Championship clash in Sydney.

Farrell called Lowe a “larger‑than‑life character” and praised his contributions since debuting in 2020, but stressed that selection is not his role. He warned that someone must step up to fill the mantle Lowe leaves behind as Ireland prepares for matches against Japan and New Zealand in July. The coach confirmed Osborne will start on the wing this weekend.
