Lowe Ends Leinster Career After Nine Years and Record 71 Tries

James Lowe confirmed he will depart Leinster this summer after nine seasons with the province, bringing an end to a remarkable spell that yielded 71 tries in 101 appearances - a club record. The 33-year-old New Zealand-born wing joined in 2017 and helped Leinster capture five United Rugby Championship titles plus the 2018 Champions Cup. His final appearance will come in the URC final against the Bulls at Croke Park on 19 June.

Lowe's influence extended beyond Leinster, earning 45 Ireland caps since qualifying through residency in 2020. He played a vital role in Andy Farrell's side securing two Six Nations championships and featured for the British and Irish Lions during last year's victorious Australia tour. His 17 international tries underscore his impact on the wing.

This departure comes as a surprise after Farrell indicated both Lowe and Bundee Aki would extend their contracts before the Six Nations. While Aki signed a new deal with Connacht, Lowe appears headed for Japan's Suntory Sungoliath, which would suspend his Ireland career ahead of next year's World Cup in Australia. The timing complicates Ireland's planning for the global showpiece.

In an emotional statement, Lowe said 'not everyone gets their fairytale ending' and described Ireland as home rather than just a workplace. His departure represents a significant loss of experience and finishing ability for Irish rugby just twelve months from the World Cup.
