Leo Cullen to exit Leinster after 12-year reign

Leinster Rugby confirmed on Monday that head coach Leo Cullen will step down when his contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 season. The 48‑year‑old former Ireland second‑row has guided the province for 12 years, delivering six United Rugby Championship crowns and a 2018 European Champions Cup triumph.

Cullen’s side lifted the URC trophy in Friday’s Grand Final against the Bulls, marking the latest of those six league victories. Yet the same era produced five European final defeats, including four losses in the past five campaigns, a blemish that has fueled speculation about a new direction.

Cullen told supporters his 12‑year tenure aligns with 32 years since his school‑boy debut for Leinster, and he intends to honour the contract through next season. Leinster and the IRFU have launched an immediate recruitment drive, pledging a formal process to secure the “best possible” replacement.

CEO Shane Nolan praised Cullen’s record, citing seven trophies in 11 years and the Croke Park Grand Final win as evidence of his impact. With the coaching vacancy now open, Leinster faces a crucial hiring window that could shape the province’s competitiveness in both domestic and European contests.
