Joe Schmidt Rules Out Leinster Return, Future Test Job

Outgoing Australia head coach Joe Schmidt has definitively stated he is not considering a return to coaching with Leinster Rugby. While his son is employed by the club, Schmidt dismissed the possibility of replacing Leo Cullen, whose tenure ends after the 2026-27 season. Schmidt humorously remarked that Leinster likely doesn't need the entire Schmidt family involved.

Schmidt, who previously led Leinster to two European Cups, indicated his focus remains solely on finishing his current role with Australia. He expressed confidence in the current Ireland coaching staff, noting they are ready to lead independently. "I feel like they are great. I feel like I can take a few steps back, and they can really lead themselves now," Schmidt stated.

Schmidt will travel to Ireland on August 10th, but he confirmed this trip is purely for family reasons, looking forward to seeing his new grandson and enjoying a break, not for coaching discussions. His commitment is to completing his duties with the Wallabies for their remaining matches and facilitating a smooth transition for the team.

His current contract with Australia concludes soon, and he has made it clear that a return to club rugby, specifically Leinster, is not on his agenda presently. Schmidt emphasized his short-term focus, dedicating his energy to his final games with the national team.
