Derry City have named Mark Connolly as their new director of football following his decision to end his playing career. The 34-year-old defender returns to the Brandywell after departing for Coleraine in January, bringing extensive experience from spells across both sides of the Irish Sea.

Connolly's playing CV includes stints at Bolton, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock and Dundee United, where he captured the Scottish Championship title in 2020. He initially joined Derry in 2022 after a loan period at Dundalk, contributing to their 2022 FAI Cup triumph before his move to Coleraine earlier this year.

Coleraine manager Ruaidhri Higgins praised Connolly's impact at the Showgrounds, noting his professionalism despite limited playing time. Higgins believes Connolly possesses all the qualities needed for success in his new administrative role. Connolly expressed enthusiasm about working with manager Tiernan Lynch to develop players, staff and academy prospects.

Derry currently sit sixth in the League of Ireland Premier Division ahead of Friday's home clash with Bohemians. The appointment signals the club's intent to build on recent cup success while strengthening their infrastructure for future campaigns.
