Derry City chairman Philip O'Doherty described the decision to part ways with manager Tiernan Lynch as "pretty much a snap decision," finalized just prior to the club's announcement on Wednesday.

The Candystripes currently sit sixth in the Premier Division, having won only one of their last seven matches. Lynch, who led Derry to a second-place finish and European qualification last season after joining in November 2024, was dismissed following a disappointing campaign.

"This year hasn't been up to expectations and has been a disappointment," O'Doherty told BBC Sport NI. He cited the club's ambition and the arrival of Mark Connolly in a director of football role as factors in making the change now, with European spots and cup competitions still to play for.

O'Doherty emphasized that decisions are made based on on-field performance and discussions with fellow directors, rather than social media or pundits. He noted that while the players were surprised, they understood the decision. Lynch was reportedly disappointed but parted amicably.
