Olympic 800m freestyle champion Daniel Wiffen heads to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a personal mission. His mother Rachel, diagnosed with leukaemia last November, announced she is now in remission, turning her battle into his driving force. Wiffen says every podium finish will be dedicated to her, hoping the crowd sees his gratitude. He recalled early mornings together, crediting his parents for keeping him grounded.

The family credits staff at Belfast City Hospital’s Northern Ireland Cancer Centre for the swift recovery, and Wiffen visited the unit to present his medals. After a stint training in California, he returned to Dublin to fine‑tune his programme ahead of a packed summer that includes the European Championships in August. He believes the new base better suits his preparation.

Wiffen joins fellow Irish gold‑medallists Jack McMillan and Paralympic champion Bethany Firth as the headline of a 15‑strong Team NI squad. McMillan will contest the 100, 200 and 400 m freestyle, while Firth defends her S14 200 m title. Their depth across freestyle and para events strengthens Northern Ireland’s medal prospects. Their collective experience gives Northern Ireland a realistic shot at multiple podium finishes in Glasgow.
