Bezzecchi Wins MotoGP Opener as Marquez Retires in Thailand

Marco Bezzecchi claimed the opening race of the 2026 MotoGP season in Thailand, delivering a dominant performance that saw him start on pole and secure a five-second victory over teammate Pedro Acosta.

Bezzecchi's triumph was a significant comeback after crashing out of the sprint race on Saturday, forcing him to rebound strongly. The Aprilia rider set a new track record in qualifying and finished his third consecutive win, having secured the final two races of 2025. Defending champion Marc Marquez, chasing a record-equalling eighth title, retired with five laps remaining due to a tyre puncture while running fourth, ending his podium hopes and damaging his championship challenge.

This result immediately shifts the early-season narrative, putting Bezzecchi's Aprilia team in pole position for the title fight. Marquez's early exit, coming just days after missing the final four races of 2025 due to a shoulder injury, raises serious questions about his readiness and consistency. The race also saw Jorge Martin finish fourth for Aprilia, while Ai Ogura of Trackhouse claimed fifth. Last year's runner-up Alex Marquez did not finish after a late crash, and Francesco Bagnaia secured ninth place for Ducati.
