Badminton Tests Synthetic Shuttlecocks Due to Feather Shortage

Badminton's world governing body has approved the use of synthetic shuttlecocks at select tournaments amid a global shortage of feathers. Traditional shuttlecocks require 16 duck or goose feathers from the same wing to ensure proper flight and spin. China, the leading producer, has seen reduced poultry output due to bird flu outbreaks and decreased demand for poultry following an African swine fever crisis in 2018.

The sport's growing popularity in China has further strained the shuttlecock supply chain, driving up prices worldwide. Last year, the Badminton World Federation acknowledged these challenges while pursuing alternatives. Secretary General Thomas Lund emphasized the organization's commitment to testing and trialing synthetic options for both competitive and recreational play.

This move represents a significant shift in badminton equipment standards as the federation works to ensure sustainable access to shuttlecocks. The synthetic shuttlecock trials aim to address supply chain vulnerabilities while maintaining competitive integrity in the sport.
