This situation echoes a 2014 incident where two Ugandan rugby players disappeared after the Games, later resurfacing in Cardiff. One player, Philip Pariyo, received a prison sentence for rape.

The Home Office reportedly conducts enhanced checks for major sporting events and works with organizers to strengthen entry controls. Any asylum claims are evaluated individually. The 11-day competition, featuring 10 sports across four locations in Glasgow, was described by organizers as a "streamlined format" that "saved and reinvented" the event after previous host Victoria withdrew.
