Antonelli dominates Monaco as Russell falters

Mercedes’ two drivers arrived in Monaco on opposite ends of the spectrum. Nineteen‑year‑old Kimi Antonelli turned a pole‑position start after a chaotic qualifying session into a fifth straight victory, extending his championship lead to 66 points after just six races. In contrast, teammate George Russell limped to 13th, describing the weekend as “beyond frustration” after a pit‑lane speeding penalty derailed his race.

Ferrari arrived as favourites but could only muster a third‑grid slot, trailing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Antonelli. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called Antonelli’s qualifying lap “unbelievable,” and the race saw the Italian pull clear, building a 20‑second advantage before cooling brakes briefly slowed him. Verstappen’s engine failure removed the only serious threat to the young champion’s dominance.

Russell’s misfortune stemmed from a missed five‑second penalty during a safety‑car restart, forcing a drive‑through that dropped him out of the points. He lamented losing “40 points” through circumstances beyond his control and admitted his season has become a series of bad luck rather than performance. Antonelli’s flawless run now sets a significant benchmark for the rest of the championship.
