Russell fumes after Monaco disaster, drops to third in standings

George Russell entered the 2026 season as championship favourite, yet the Monaco GP left him third in the drivers’ table. Qualifying sixth, he fell behind teammate Kimi Antonelli, who later secured his fifth straight win. A pit‑lane speeding penalty and a series of traffic jams compounded the misery, ending Russell with zero points.

The narrow F1 cars in Monaco magnify qualifying importance, and Russell’s sixth‑place start set a bleak race trajectory. He spent the opening stint stuck behind Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull, losing over half a minute to the leaders. An undercut on lap 31 failed to alleviate the problem as Lando Norris’s McLaren blocked his progress, allowing Antonelli to lap him before the safety car arrived.

Antonelli now tops the championship with 156 points, while Lewis Hamilton sits second on 90, just two ahead of Russell’s 88. The British driver sits 70 points behind the leader and admits the gap is “not too big to close.” He insists something must change if he hopes to salvage the season.
