Angharad Evans, a swimmer for Scotland, has become a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games, exceeding pre-Games expectations. Despite qualifying fastest, she was initially overlooked.

Evans, who could have represented England or Wales, chose Scotland after training at the University of Stirling. The home crowd's fervent support propelled her to victory, with the noise reaching a crescendo as she touched the wall. Evans, who was sixth at the Paris Olympics, found the Scottish fans' energy crucial in the final metres of the race.

"It's not the biggest crowd I've competed in front of, but it's the loudest and the most passionate," Evans stated. She felt their "energy and love especially in the last five metres when it hurt." Evans further explained her choice, "Scotland felt right, it felt like home. They made me the athlete I am today and I dreamed of getting a gold and having the crowd roar and this is that but 100 times bigger."

Her main event, the 200m on Wednesday, is considered a stronger prospect, suggesting she may experience the Tollcross atmosphere and its support again. Evans admitted, "I don't think you can top how that felt tonight but we'll see how it goes."
