WSL Alcohol Trials Show Positive Fan Safety Results

WSL clubs have completed 100 fixtures in their alcohol trial, with early data showing no safety disruption. A survey of 4,270 fans gave fan safety a 9.4/10 score, while 70% now support drinks at games—a jump from 58% last summer. Fifteen clubs across the top two tiers are involved, with three more joining for the season's end.

The Women's Super League operates under different rules than the men's game, as the Control of Alcohol Act doesn't prohibit stand consumption. WSL Football is currently reviewing competition rules that restrict the practice. Clubs are using the trials to innovate with fan experiences, from bottomless brunches at Chelsea-Arsenal matches to half-price drinks and signature cocktails at other venues.

Hannah Buckley, WSL Football's head of infrastructure, noted the league is driven by fan opinion, not pushing alcohol. With family-friendly scores at 9.1/10 and atmosphere ratings at 8.6, the data suggests integration is working. A final survey will follow the League Cup final before shareholders vote on making the trials permanent. The approach could influence how women's football grows its matchday culture.
